When using Merge function is there a way for the single line diagram to be updated with the merged file components?

Everyone has different layout preference. PTW does not automatically modify drawings.

You have to add the existing components into any drawings manually by right-clicking on the one-line > Existing. Afterwards, you can use the Expand feature to expand out to show connected components.
