Installation Instructions for Network (Red) Driverless USB Key

What is the Hardware Key?

The hardware key protects your investment and ours, and allows multiple people to use the software without violating the license agreement. Your PTW software will include one of these keys, and will not run without it. However, once you have installed the key, you can forget about it. The key does its job automatically. The network hardware key needs to be installed on a Windows server or computer that is always on. This server must also have a static LAN IP address that can always be reached by the workstations.

Should I Install PTW on the Server or the Workstations?
You have two options for installing and running PTW on a network:

· Install PTW on each workstation. This is recommended so that users can take advantage of their workstation’s processing power for better software performance. This is also preferable if you want each user to have his or her own set of libraries.

· Install PTW on a shared server and run PTW on each workstation using a shortcut to that file server. This is preferable if you want everyone to use the same set of libraries.If you use option 2, you will need to install the Advanced Features SKM to every workstation. Advanced Features include special reporting fonts, Crystal Reports, SKMPDF, etc.).

Part 1: Getting the Server to Broadcast the Hardware Key

· Log on with Full Administrative Rights.

· Download and run HASPUserSetup.exe from here:

· Attach the hardware key to the server. (You may attach the hardware key to a workstation instead of the server, but you must keep that workstation turned on anytime another workstation wants to use PTW. Since users typically turn off their workstations when they leave work, we recommend that you put the hardware key on the server, since servers usually remain on at all times. Whichever you choose, though, remember that the computer with the hardware key must be turned on and the NetHASP License Manager must be broadcasting for PTW to run.)

· Open a browser and go to http://localhost:1947/_int_/devices.html (You should see your hardware key listed under the Sentinel Keys section of the Sentinel Admin Control Center).

Part 2: Getting the software to see the hardware key

Installing PTW on the workstation:
1. Downloading the Installation File for PTW
Go to or and click on the My SKM box on the top right. Log in using your my-skm credentials. If you don't have an account, email and send in a request to add your account to your license. In the email, make sure to state your license / serial number. Do not create an account by yourself as your license will not be tied to the account and you won't be able to access the downloads.

Once you are logged into your my-skm account, click on the License Box. 

After, you will see a Download Software button. 

If your company has many licenses with us, it may not show it initially and instead show a search bar. Simply search for the license using the serial number or press the magnifying glass button to display all license under the company.

From there, you will need to click on the Power*Tools Version Full Software to download the installation file.

2. Installation Process
Once the PTW32_V*_Installation_Files.exe is downloaded, run the installation.
During the installation, most fields you will not have to modify and can leave as default. 

(Note: If your computer does not have sufficient privileges, you will have to right click on the installation file -> Run as administrator. If not run as administrator, you will get a CKeyNT  - Access Denied error during the installation process.)

3. Installing the USB Key Drivers and Setting Up for the Network License (Local Workstation)
If your workstations will run PTW using a shortcut to the shared server or computer, you only need to perform the following steps on that machine.
If your workstations will have PTW installed to locally, you need to repeat these steps on each workstation which has PTW installed.

1. Download and run HASPUserSetup.exe from here: 
You can also find the driver installation in C:\PTW32\bin\HaspUserSetup.exe

2. Go to the C:\PTW32\BIN folder and rename look for the NETHASP.INI file. Rename the file to  from "nethasp.ini" to "nethasp_.ini" (Add an underscore in the filename.) 

3. Go to the C:\PTW32\LIB folder and look for NETHASPIP_.INI and rename the file from "nethaspip_.ini" to "nethaspip.ini" (Delete the underscore in the filename.)

4. Double-click the NETHASPIP.INI file and open it with Notepad. In the first line, after the "IP," input the IP address of the server "" where the x refers to the server IP address

5. Save the NETHASPIP.INI file and close it.

6. Start PTW will run on the workstation. When prompted, select Network Hardware Key and the licensed modules that you have purchased.

7. If PTW does not run, you will need to conduct an aggressive search in the Sentinel Admin Control Center:
  • With HaspUserSetup.exe installed, open a web browser and go to http://localhost:1947 Click on Configuration > Access to Remote License Managers.
  • Enter the server IP address and click on Submit.
  • Wait 1 minute and check to see if a key with Vendor ID 45805 is populated under the Sentinel Keys tab. Once you can see the key, start PTW. When prompted, select Network Hardware Key and the licensed modules that you have purchased.

  • *If you are using an older version of the HaspUserSetup.exe drivers, perform the following steps:
  • Enter the server IP address, check Aggressive Search for Remote Licenses, and click on Submit.
  • Wait 1 minute and check to see if a key with Vendor ID 45805 is populated under the Sentinel Keys tab. Once you can see the key, start PTW. When prompted, select Network Hardware Key and the licensed modules that you have purchased.

  • Part 3 (Optional): Admin Control Center, User List, Logging
    Monitoring the Hardware Key & Users 

    On the server where the key is attached, open a web browser and go to http://localhost:1947.

    Click on Sentinel Keys on the left side panel. From here, you will be able to view available study modules and any users connected to the licenses, which you click on Sessions.

    The following table contains the program number along with the corresponding study module.

    Workstation users can also access the License Manager by going to http://localhost:1947 (provided that HASPUserSetup.exe was installed on their workstation). Make sure “Allow Remote Access to ACC” is checked on the server.

    Click on Configuration on the left-hand side. Check the boxes to enable “Write an Access Log File”, “Include Local Requests”, “Include Remote Requests”.

    Log files are stored in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Aladdin Shared\HASP\log

    What if I Want to Use the Network Key Temporarily as a Local Key?

    Occasionally you might want to use the network key locally—for example, if you have a laptop computer and want to take the network key home. You can install PTW on the computer as you normally would, but once PTW is installed you will need to install the standalone driver for the hardware key.

    1. To install the driver, you can run C:\PTW32\bin\HASPUserSetup.exe with Full Administrative Rights
    NOTE: HASPUserSetup.exe can also be located on our website (

    2. Configure C:\PTW32\lib\nethaspip.ini. Refer to Part 2 above for step-by-step instructions. Use as the IP address of your local machine. Otherwise, use your Computer Host Name as the server address.

    3. Start PTW32 and when prompted, select "Network Hardware Key".

    • Windows Remote Desktop is not supported. Accessing a HASP key over RDP will not work because RDP is a terminal session. A server will allow multiple terminal sessions. Because the key cannot detect how many sessions are in progress, the key will be disabled for security purposes. Otherwise, users can log into unlimited sessions and use PTW on each session, defeating the security.
