Identify a component as New or Existing

I need the ability to identify each component as New or Existing similar to the way Data State works. New or Existing would also be an attribute that can be included with a datablock. Assigning a user selectable color to New and Existing would be helpful too.

For new build projects, every component is new. For existing systems, where nothing changes and the scope is to just add arc flash labels, all components are existing. For a remodel, you might have new and existing components. SKM's definition of new and existing appears to be "if it is a component in the model, it is existing and if it is not in the model, but you add it to the model it is new".

User Defined fields do not work well because the data is not stored they same way in the datablock from project to project as hard coded attributes inherent to SKM. The "Attribute ID" or "Field s:id" changes from project to project and is not repeatable. This would require updates or changing the datablock for each project because the ID number changes.
